Zany. Musical. Gifted. Teacher.

Can music be funny? To Ben Kaye-Skinner, anything can be funny and a lot of things in this world can be music. Ben's a combination of that kid you remember from high school. He's that kid who took piano lessons (but at age 7 preferred to write his own music rather than practice someone else's.) The kid who lived for marching band and show choir. But he's also that kid who made everyone laugh...He's the first student conductor at Doane to ask if could put the pep band in kilts. And the one who created music of humor and whimsy, like Tuo Edisni (Inside Out), or Eucant (You Can't) March...

To Korea and Back - Honoring Tanny Reinsch | - Insurance & Real Estate, Geneva & Shickley, NE

**This Memorial Day, we honor Shickley veteran and longtime Fortify Group customer Francis Reinsch. On Monday, Francis “Tanny” Reinsch and his wife, Marilyn, will travel to Shickley's Memorial Day Service, as they do every year possible. They might gather in the community center afterward, sitting down to the table with other veterans and spouses and family members. That’s what is visible on the surface; Tanny -- a vibrant force even as he nears 90 -- enjoying the camaraderie, a couple of hours to catch up over sandwiches and pie. He might turn his head to better hear the conversation on his left side, with the ear that came too close to a mortar round in Korea...

Bart Brinkman | - Insurance & Real Estate, Geneva & Shickley, NE

On fall Saturdays, as he readies for Husker football games, the little rituals remind Bart Brinkman of a day he would rather forget. Just like that day, tickets go in his billfold. He grabs a ballcap for sunny games; a stocking cap for the cold. He gets behind the wheel and points his Chevy toward Memorial Stadium. Two years ago a terrifying car accident on that same drive almost changed everything. He still carries a scar, a bit of nerve damage and hazy memories of the event...

About | - Insurance & Real Estate, Geneva & Shickley, NE

Our company’s roots go back more than 50 years. (We were a start-up before start-ups were a thing.) Fortify Group began in Shickley in 1965 when original owner Bill Brinkman opened doors in a downtown storefront. It kicked off five decades of insurance services to Fillmore and Thayer counties as well as other parts of Nebraska. Shickley businessman Richard Walter purchased the agency in 1979 and named it the Richard Walter Insurance Agency. The company grew steadily, evolving into a strong and

The Still

On a clear night in 1934, a 2 a.m. shotgun blast yanks a 9-year-old kid from slumber. The 9-year-old is 78 now, still living on the same farm south of Milligan, in a brick ranch that replaced the farmhouse of his youth. But Rudy Capek still remembers that sound, interrupting the stillness of rural Nebraska when it sleeps. He later learned the gunshot was a signal, an "all clear" for the supply trucks of a massive alcohol distilling plant operating secretly at a nearby farm.

Customer Spotlight - Brent Kassik

At that first race back in 2005, back in Hobby Stocks at the Beatrice Speedway, everyone was nervous -- the pit crew, the family, and certainly Brent Kassik, the driver. He was belted into his newly constructed car with no racing experience unless you count watching NASCAR. “We missed hot laps. We missed the heat race. I probably went five laps the whole night,” Brent said, shaking his head at the memory. Embarrassed or not, when he was done, he could not wait to race again...

Shickley Grocery | - Insurance & Real Estate, Geneva & Shickley, NE

The doors to Shickley’s only grocery store closed late in 2016. For the first time, many residents could remember, there was an empty corner building downtown and trips out of town to buy milk. Shickley mom Gladys Schlegel wanted to change that situation as much as anyone and let her son, Chris, in South Dakota, know it. “This is bad. We’re losing our store,” she told him in one phone call. Then she planted a tiny seed of an idea. Why didn’t Chris and his wife, Cassie, buy the store?
